It’s that time of the year… when you are still on a tinsel hangover and suffering from a the post-Christmas food coma but there’s still one big night to go before the ‘holidays’ are over and you need to go back to reality.
New Year’s Eve (“NYE”), just like Christmas, is not traditionally celebrated in Sri Lanka where the Sinhalese and the Tamil (two ethnicities in Sri Lanka) celebrate the dawn of their new year in April which is linked to the movement of the sun in the astrological calendar. But of course, who can resist the temptation from a good ol’ party.
So if you are travelling in Sri Lanka on New Year’s Eve, there are plenty of places to choose from to ring in the new year with a rockin’ party!
In no definitive order, I’ve tried to compile what looks to me like 7 best NYE parties in Sri Lanka in the commercial capital of Colombo or in the beaches of the south coast.
- 31st Mews Blast – Park Street Mews (https://www.facebook.com/events/152391608459076/)
Home to three restaurants, Park Street Restaurant (fusion), Cafe Francais (French) and Park Street Trattoria (Italian), you’ll be sure to find a place to indulge your taste buds before rocking in the new year on the cobblestone street lit up with fairy lights under the warm winter moon.
Where: Park Street, Colombo 07
How much: Free entrance
- Amuseum NYE – Taj Samudra North Lawn (https://www.facebook.com/AmuseumSpecialEvents/?fref=ts)
If you like a club atmosphere recreated on expansive grounds overlooking the Indian Ocean, then this is the party to be at. The Amuseum Special Events team always knows how to throw a good party, and this year might not be an exception.
Where: Taj Samudra North Lawn, Galle Face, Colombo 01
How much: LKR 12,000 (entrance, buffet and selected drinks)
- Mad Hatter’s Tea Party – Flamingo House (https://www.facebook.com/events/1527523637568494/)
Flamingo House is a new addition to Colombo’s restaurant scene and with it’s quirky decor and its signature colourful cocktails, the Love Bar at the Flamingo House, already looks like a fun place to throw out your inhibitions and hop into the new year.
Where: Flamingo House,58A Horton Place, Colombo 07
How Much: LKR 7000 (entrance and selected drinks)
- Throwback – Steuart & Co (https://www.facebook.com/events/1666610613577221/0)
Just because a new year is dawning doesn’t mean it’s not good to get a bit nostalgic and think back to the golden olden days. If you like ‘70’s and ‘80’s music, then the Throwback is the party for you. Pull out your flares and your platform shoes (which are incidentally back in style!) and boogy into 2016!
Where: Steuart & Co, 45 Hospital Lane, Off Chatham Street, Colombo 01
How Much: LKR 9500 (entrance and buffet)
