Travelling with Kids in Sri Lanka: Handy Tips for a Family Vacation

Taking a sojourn in gorgeous Sri Lanka with your little ones in tow? Here’s a heads up on precautionary measures that you can undertake for your family trip:

Travel with Kids

  • Drink plenty of water, as the heat of the tropics may leave you and your family members prone to dehydration.
  • Check local swimming conditions carefully before letting your little ones in to frolick in the sea waters. Undercurrents may be present in the waters at certain beaches, making it unsafe even for experienced swimmers to venture into the waters for a swim.
  • If you are travelling during the rainy season, be sure to arm yourself with a trusty mosquito repellent. With dengue fever being a predominant problem in Sri Lanka and a lack of vaccination available, it is best to take preventive measures during your travels, as the dengue mosquito can strike at any time of the day.
  • Malaria is also a risk, although areas such as Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Gampaha, Kalutara, Matara and Nuwara Eliya are considered to be safe. Cover up during the evenings, use mosquito repellents and sleep under a mosquito net.
  • Medications that you require may not be readily available in Sri Lanka. Do bring along a basic medical kit, prescription medicines, as well as a spare copy of your prescription.
  • Altitude sickness may occur in certain regions. Allow your body to adjust to the changes in altitude, bring along altitude sickness pills and drink plenty of water.
  • Do not drink water from the tap. Take caution with drinks containing ice, as well as consuming fresh fruits and vegetables that you did not peel or prepare yourself.
